There’s green stuff in my vessel. Is that normal?Updated 2 years ago
You’re likely referring to algae. Thankfully, this algae is harmless to your plant! Even if algae grows on the roots of your plant, it should not impact the plant’s growth.
Algae grows when light hits the water and nutrient mixture. The best way to prevent this from occurring in the future is to block sunlight from hitting the water reservoir. In the past, we’ve seen folks use foil, bandannas, and other fun fabrics wrapped around the outside of their vessel to keep algae from growing.
To remove the algae, just wipe out the jar with a clean rag/paper towel and water (without soap). Repeat the same process for the wick, just give it a gentle wipe down.
